Animal Inside

Human Beings, top notch species of  Darwinian evolution. We proudly  wrongly consider ourselves much more cultured, developed and intelligent than any other. We have families, relationships, industries, transportation facilities, communication etc. We care, love, share, enjoy and what not. One can write a full length novella on this. But, sometimes we get to see the flipside of this evolved species. These days newspapers are full of such incidences where a person who looks like us, sometimes very familiar to us does something so horrific that mere thought of it creeps you inside out.
Suddenly, you feel like somewhere deep down that animal instinct is still there. It's just dormant deep within us. But, somewhere somehow it gets activated in few godforsaken individuals.

Filth that moves around
stealthily, silently
triggers neurons,
makes someone do...
unhealthy, nasty things.

An animal, lives inside,
hides behind the face.
Lurks, leaves no trace
fakes so perfectly,
elegance, love and grace.

Contaminated throughout
Poisonous nails..
that grow inwards..
Waiting for semaphore..
that opportune hour.

Jump out..
Shed the skin
do the act
seize the moment
Go back with
routine things..

Some say
Blame it on TV
others say, its the..
growing culture
and vogue that surrounds..

Few say
its the dormant beast
that takes over..
that transforms someone
into an animal..
Which we thought was
lost in evolution..

I don't think we ever lost that animal instinct. It's there in everyone. But, with time we somehow learned to tame it. History is full of such human- beasts and animals who gave us enough reasons to keep this uncontrollable, brutal genetic power in check. Unfortunately, when I look at the incidents that are happening all around I wonder.... Is animal really under control ??

  1. Your posts are always different.... good work jyoti :)

  2. Controlling the beast inside might be tough but we need it to live at peace.

I think the things happening around just stimulate the beast for worst and sometime mere good for using it against.

    Well wrote jyoti :)

  3. Again....thoughtfully put frward....I don't think that animal instinct will ever go :(:(

  4. whoah this blog is fantastic i love reading your articles. Keep up the good work!
    From India

  5. Yeah it will always be there, man is too dumb to ignore it sometimes though with their greed and war bringing it out.

  6. A thought provoking write-up. Man in contrast to fellow animals has gone to two kinds of evolution, not just bio-evolutionary one, other being cultural evolution. But cultural evolution is only skin deep, not as yet penetrated to his genes. Desmond Morris,an authority on animal behaviour is of opinion that man is still an ape in cultural clothing and more often than not his/her primeval instincts are aroused when stimuli are strong! So sadly enough your observations are right and one should be aware of the animal instincts man still harbour!

  7. Jyoti,

Very true. It is only animal within which makes one do such barbaric deeds.

    Take care

  8. Humans talk about peace but they are animals within. Rest depend upon activity of neurons as you have already said it.

  9. Jyoti, your posts are synonymus with human complexity and this one too addresses one such area, of animal instinct. 'Johari's Windows' is a good read to know more about human psychology:)

  10. It kicks up when we are not aware of it. We have to contain it.

  11. Nice and original post impress everyone.

  12. Hi Jyoti, how are you? It has been some time since I last heard from you!
Hope you are keeping well. I enjoyed this piece about the animal instinct in us - it is true. Somehow most of us have tamed it and unless threatened with something drastic, we have learned to leash up the animal in us.

  13. oy yes look around a the world and i think the animal is alive and well...and now awake...i wonder if we have not stepped backward in how we deal with people...

  14. Well written post...Man is a social animal...

  15. Good presentation.
