Smoking Kid

A custom loathsome to the
eye, hateful to the nose,
harmful to the brain,
dangerous to the lungs,
and in the black, stinking
fume thereof nearest
resembling the horrible
Stygian smoke of the pit
that is bottomless.”
~James I of England

Everyone knows the risks and hazards, yet Nicotine is one of the most prominently used stimulant drug in 21st century across the world and amongst all ages and races. Intake by youngsters is escalating at alarming speed.
Its a favorite time pass and stress buster among them. Turn around in public and see boys and girls holding that filthy piece of crap in hands basking in the midst of unhealthy serpentine smoke and screwing their lungs up.

What's so delectable, enticing and bewitching in it ?
What makes it so strong that each and every bone in the body crave for that one pot.

One more and.. just once more leads to severe addiction which does nothing but damage to the body.
Never really got the gratifying explanation for this question... just wispy excuses and lame answers.

Smoking Kid: Its a video going viral online. Video is a Thai government initiative in which a kid casually comes near a smoking person and asks- " Can I get a light ? " Appalling reply by almost everyone- "Don't you want to live and play?"  Go away..

Now again the question arises when they know how calamitous this act is... still
why continue to puff that smoke away ???
Why not stop ??

Novelty Seeking:
A jargon coined by people who love to try new things, apparently in this case people with impulsive nature, risk loving guys and girls, and individuals with high need for stimulation. I say... to hell with this kind of novelty and experimentation. There are far better ways to experiment and feel good and there exists in society many institution that encourages and supports this so called novelty.

 Have you ever experienced
the snuff sensation
yet? Wow, it’s heady stuff.
C'mon try it once..
Try this time..
Don't be a coward..
If you ever here such advice and taunts again...
Don't give in..

Physical Dependence:
Once a person becomes addicted he/she can become physically dependent on nicotine. Scenes of frustration and desperation are common when it comes to withdrawal. Its not like one doesn't want to get rid of it... but most of them give up in short/long time.

Thank heaven, I have
given up smoking again!
. . . God! I feel fit.
Homicidal, but fit. A
different man. Irritable,
moody, depressed, rude,
nervy, perhaps; but the
lungs are fine....

These are the words of a person who was successful in getting rid of it...
Somebody has rightly said that "Cigarettes are killers that travel in packs."
Why not we just ban it ? What good it is doing to society ??
Nothing at all... Gone are the days of Columbus when Nicotine was accepted widely as having medical therapeutic value... Now Science & Technology is advanced and equipped enough to survive without such toxic medication.

Anna Quindlen famous columnist rightly says that-

Whether talking about addiction, taxation [on cigarettes] or education [about smoking], there is always at the center of the conversation an essential conundrum: How come we're selling this deadly stuff anyway?

Smoking Kid forces everyone to think that why this tinker's dam Nicotine still exists ??

Thai Health Promotion Foundation- Smoking Kid

  1. Because it is all about the greed, it is everywhere and it all comes down to money. Doctors get money from cancer and the companies get money from the product, as well the government from taxes, just greed.

    1. why almost every evil thing.. comes down to money n greed :(

  2. ugh....smoked for a very short time in life...a couple months and it was nasty and horrible and i did it just to fit in honestly but...ugh...nice eye opener on the vid...

    1. thank god u left it.... it is horrible indeed... video is really good:)

  3. and they always have that lame excuse while smoking....STRESS....damn it..:(

moreover govt n authorities think that only by giving that statutory warning over the pack of it is enough for them to do....see, even now wen there is a law about not to smoke in public places we can very well see people doing that openly and no on bothers to ask them....i wish some sense pevail among these smokers and they atleast start thinking about their own health if not about others.

thanks or sharing this thought provoking post...

  5. Smoking is on the rise despite so many warnings on packs and so much publicity! The worst offenders are boys and girls who are educated well and holding positions in corporate world! Besides addiction I think it is also associated with a style quotient at the risk of their own health!Appreciate your effort to sensitize people on this issue

  6. An Ad said, A Cigarette in my hand, I felt like a man...but really!!!

  7. A Beautiful try....i truly appreciate. . .

  8. A very socially relevant post.
    Good to see you back!

  9. I started smoking aged 11 back in the 60's before it was so well known about how harmful it is. The tabacco barons don't want anyone to quit and as they manufacture them they add over 2000 diff chemicals to the nicotine to ensure you stay hooked. I really got hooked and stayed hooked for 30 years. Smokers have addictive personalities and are basically selfish when it comes to other people breathing in their second hand smoke. They don't care if you do. I quit smoking twice. This second time is now over 5 years into it. I still smell the smoke at times and could easily smoke again. Once an addict, always an addict. But the kids do it because they (like me) have probably grown up in a house where their parents smoke and therefore they already have the second hand smoke craving in them. They also do it to look tough, older, smart. They don't realise they are paying to slowly kill themselves. No-one wants to die and yet, smokers are commiting suicide with ever puff of smoke they inhale. Trouble is, it sometimes takes years for the effects of smoking to really cause damage to your body and as a kid you think it's easy to quit, you don't even realise, you're already addicted.
    Great post Jyoti

  10. Really, Yuth/Kids are passing throgh a dangerous line

  11. A daily scholar can easily relate to this issue.
I won't deny the fact that batchmates aren't doing it; but awhile ago it was just for fun but now consumed by I-don't-know-what.
    Hope they realize. :)

  12. Jyoti,

I used to smoke but gave it up almost 35 years ago. So I can support this campaign with my own experience.

    Take care

  13. Deadly addiction....a very useful post...

  14. I am shocked to see kids smoking. I can never understand the enjoyment in it. Someone said to me that he smokes as smoking is in. Can you believe such thing?

  15. My friend,
Great and educational post!! Sadly, no one has the power to STOP this nasty habit!! Thank God I don't smoke. Thanks for sharing.

  16. Thought provoking and a very good post educating against the evils of smoking.
    Thanks Jyoti.

  17. well i think media has played the wrost part in this thing...people seeing Don smoking, people see other celebrity smoking, smoking symbolize power and charisma and aura and that is what attracts the kids and children towards smoking,,,,

  18. nice post, par jise lat lag jaaye use samjhana bahut mushkil hota hain

  19. People who smoke and drink don't even accept that they are doing something harmful to their health. They think it's cool and fun, but when they have to face the consequences, they will suffer (with interest).

I was working in the sales line before and many of my colleagues were chain smokers. They had an excuse saying that it's because of the work pressure. The people who were not addicted to cigarettes - Weren't they having the same work pressure too? How are they able to stay away from cigarettes?

Your blog is good. Keep writing more about social issues and someday we can hope to make this world a better place to live in.

  20. I hear you loud and clear with this ~ Unfortunately smoking is a business ~ But I am happy to see that it is regulated here in Canada, but still the long term repercussions is very harmful ~

  21. Great message to the society! A thoughtful post.

People well aware its cause but still smokes... It’s all in their hand to leave or hold to live or die but a diversion in mind and sincere workout could relief this habit.

  22. Jolt it. Halt it. It is bad habit that has to be stopped permanently.

Write whatever may come to your mind..
I'm here with my fingers on keyboard waiting to reply :)
