Independent, Free But "SLAVES"

“People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.”
On 15 Aug we celebrated our Independence Day and country is in a mood of furor. We all talking corruption, freedom of speech, expression, protests blah, blah...
But real freedom is freedom of thought. Free from biases, prejudices and here we are still chained and doomed. Slaves of misery, differences, ego, attitudes.
This post deals with such conflicts of Freedom.
We all are damn good finger-pointers always have a finger ready to point at others.

Freedom, from all bounds
roam around
roar like a lion
fly like a bird
move, run, play
in happiest surrounds.

Everyone speaks,
defines freedom
in its own
philosophical way.
Freedom, is what
we demand, we pray.

But we are still slaved
independent, free slaves

Slaves of "What others will say ??"
We fight non-stop for array
of decorum, of status
chicanery Display
But We still say..
We are free
We are masters
We direct our plays.

Slaves of "Ego"
which burns, runs
in our nerves n veins
Its so painful to see
others happy
It gives goosebumps
and it haunts as moral strains.

Slaves of "Desires"
borne in our brains.
Makes us, inhuman pleasure-seekers
when We forget others
their plight, their dire conditions
deep drowned
in only our own selfish aspirations.

Slaves of "Fashion"
in mysterious ways
polluting, adulterating
our attitudes
speech, attire
our gallants n parades.
and we are proud
of this slavery
flaunt it
at every corner
in every possible ways.

Slaves of "Money"
for which sometimes
filthy, dirty tricks we play
to satisfy our
never-ending thirst
of power and display.
yet we never have
sense of malefaction,
transgression or dismay.

Apparently
We are independent, free Slaves :P

  6. Yes, we are still condemned to slavery - some worst off than others. Not a slave of money, food or violence we should be in full control of our own life and destiny.

  14. Well I think the role of media ir less than ideal...freedom of expression is something very different but what the media tell us is that vulgar language and dresses is all about freedom. Theres no healthy debate on controversial issues and these are best kept hidden.Well I think the role of media ir less than ideal...freedom of expression is something very different but what the media tell us is that vulgar language and dresses is all about freedom. 16. Powerful poetry - What is freedom when we are so attached to images, power and money. Freedom is such a difficult term to define - we all talk about it without knowing what it is really.

Magnificent, cuts straight to the bone. Your poem is potent, profound, and pellucid. Liberty of mind is the only true freedom. I love it!

  23. This was powerful, as is everything you write. I think this concept of freedom and slavery is one that every single human wrestles with. We willfully ignore that we tie ourselves down, making ourselves slaves to a lot of outward trappings and material things. I guess it's a constant balancing act, to check inwardly and ensure that we're focusing and putting energy into the goals that will best serve us. We define ourselves daily in this manner. :)

  25. True, we are slaves out of our own choices, nothing forced by force, but by advertisements and appeal.

    Nice post.

  26. Such a loose word, "Slaves." We adopt our slave status - our free will is not enslaved. I was just looking at: "SILAS GILES COTTON,MULLATTO SLAVE, WAS SAID, BY MY SLAVE ANCESTORS IN TEXAS, TO BE THE HALF BROTHER OF ABE LINCOLN 16TH PRESIDENT" and in those days there were real slaves...

  27. Your poem rings true. The average person is such a drone and have been conditiones thusly from the crib. Cognitive thinking is rare as hell and most people get confused when confronted by any though or idea that goes against their programming. In fact, the slave-conditioning is so insidious that often the few who see past what is called "reality" are riduculed or shrugged-off. It would seem that majority of people prefer the convenience and (false) stability of a watered down version of "freedom" than true liberation of the mind, body and soul. It can be frustrating. This environment our religious leaders, politicians and corporations have fabricated for us is nothing more than a prison.
I loved your words and hope that MAYBE some of the readers actually puse fopr a moment and think "Whose life am I leading? Who am I? Is this it, this connect-the-dots life society has hoisted upon me, is this what life is all about?"
Of course, few of us dare recognize that we lead a slave-life. Even fewer of us manage to break-free of our masters.

Great, though-provoking work, Jioti. I may not live in India, but there is a shadow-theatre being played out on a global stage.Being able to read between the lines and grasp a deeper meaning than the false truth we are offered is a gift and a burden as well. At times, an overwhelming burden.

  28. ..Jyoti, you had me in all these echoes... i had once have a blog late 2008 where i posted all my prose directly addressing the government and attacking many issues of corruption and discrimination in our country... and that caught attentions from some authority and i was forced halt doing so.. they forced me to abandon my freedom to express myself and opinions.. and sadly i was too young then and weak to stand for my words as my family and studies might be in compromised and sacrificed so i made a decision to delete the blog and remove all the articles i published.. and now it's all gone.. i moved on and now establishing myself again.. this time in the form of poetry like what you did... but i must admit my poems these days don't address much of the current issues... i hope i could be brave as you are in here... the essence of your writing is in your freedom to express your soul.. keep on shouting it loud my friend.. happy Independence day!(:

  32. I so agree with what you said about slaves of 'what would they say', ego and desires. Humans can never get out of that slavery unless they are willing to. Again... another master piece from Jyoti's blog! Love it babes. Happy Independence day to you yoo :-D

  36. The whole world has become a salve of money. Money = power and power corrupts. We worship money and it's power and the more we have the more powerful we beome. So the rich elite really rule the heads of government all around the world. The presidents prime ministers etc are just figureheads but, behind the scenes they dance to the tune of the money men who out them there.
We are all slaves in some way or other to something. The only true freedom is, as you say, in our minds. If our minds are free then, nothing can enslave us.
    Fabulous write from you!

  37. Whatever u said were exactly slaves, insane and senseless attitude, which I can’t agree no more.

A change within oneself from realization and teaching children the right way of approach is needed, which is toughest but still the best way to reduce these influences. Timing post off independence Jyoti. Very good.

    Superb!!!!

what a subject u chose to "THINK"!!!

We are the Rulers of our freedom....somewhere we are bound to think, or not to think, influenced by the atmosphere....we, ourselves are those, who build BRIDGE OR WALL to our THOUGHTS....

Truly, to have a freedom to express, we have to command freedom to think.....an unbiased think.......

    Excellent thought u expressed here........

The question perhaps is whether we are happy and others are happy because of us

  47. the human condition is slavery but the degree is related to probability. being actually enslaved is the metaphore for most today to describe the things you talk about.
adam and eve may have hated each other, but if they didnt, and they were in a real paradise, that wouldbe as close to freedom as a person could be as long as there was an awareness of what could bring down paradise and in both personalities that were mild

  48. Ahhhh , very broad outlook , so true we are shouting of what we have seen outside but then we are forgetting that deep inside so much issues needs to be addressed. Why not first resolve it ? Freedom means responsibility !

  54. Jyoti,

We may not accept it but we all are driven by some force which controls our behaviour or actions. So we are slave to that unconsciously. If we achieve freedom from that, it is then NIRVANA.

    Take care
